On Saturday, two sides in very different states of mind will meet at the Johan Cruyff Arena for a friendly. Ajax, under a new manager, have hit a superb run of form, most recently thrashing Vojvodina 4-1 in the Conference League. Burnley, by contrast, endured a miserable tour of the United States, failing to win a single match. Can the English side turn their poor pre-season around, or will the hosts continue their winning momentum?

Ajax: Tactical Reset and a Strong Start to the Season

Ajax’s previous season ended in failure, with the club finishing only fifth in the Eredivisie. That led to the dismissal of Oscar Garcia, who was replaced by Michel from Girona. The new head coach advocates an attacking style with high pressing, which fits perfectly with the club’s classic DNA. The club has been active in the transfer market. The centre of defence has been reinforced by the vastly experienced 36-year-old Daley Blind, while Caio Henrique arrived from Monaco to fill the left-back role, tasked with replacing the departed Oleksandr Zinchenko and adding thrust to attacking overlaps. The team also secured a mobile centre-forward in Marcos Leonardo (19 goals in 39 matches last season) from Al-Hilal. The Brazilian can press defenders, make intelligent runs on the edge of offside, and noticeably speed up combinations in the final third.

In their first summer friendly, the team naturally looked heavy-legged due to training loads, losing 1–3 to Panathinaikos. However, Ajax gradually found their rhythm, beating AEK 1–0 and Olympiacos 1–0, as well as drawing 1–1 with Bochum. But the main indicator of their form came in the first official match of the season – Ajax tore apart Serbian side Vojvodina 4–1 in the second qualifying round of the Conference League, dominating throughout (66% possession, 18 shots to 9, and 10 corners to 1). Among the new signings, only Blind started, playing the full match; Henrique got 20 minutes, while Marcos Leonardo did not feature at all. Instead, 16-year-old Mohamed Abdalla got his chance and scored the fourth goal.

The game against Burnley is the perfect testing ground for the squad’s fringe and reserve players. The coaching staff will have the opportunity to give proper minutes to those who remained on the bench or played only a short spell against Vojvodina. Marcos Leonardo starting from the first whistle seems almost a certainty. Beyond the Brazilian striker, Michel is likely to employ heavy rotation to evaluate the other summer arrivals and academy youngsters.

Burnley: Rebuilding After Relegation

Burnley completely botched their previous season, finishing second from bottom in the Premier League and being relegated to the Championship. That led to a change in the dugout. Now at the helm is Niki Hayen, formerly of Belgian side Genk. The new manager advocates modern football with an emphasis on ball possession, structured pressing, and active trust in youth. The Burnley hierarchy believes this philosophy will help the club return to the top flight. However, Hayen missed most of the pre-season tour of the USA: the matches against Cincinnati (1–3) and Columbus Crew (1–1) were overseen by Mike Jackson, with the Belgian only joining before the clash with Real Salt Lake (1–4). As is clear, that didn’t help much – the English side still look disjointed, making numerous defensive errors.

This is hardly surprising: Burnley have parted ways with a host of players. Particularly damaging are the losses of centre-back Maxime Estève, the main pillar of the defence, and left winger Jaydon Anthony, who was one of the attacking leaders last season. As for incomings, the only notable acquisition is defensive midfielder Florentino from Benfica, who has already scored a goal. He was clearly brought in to start, cementing the midfield, adding reliability in destruction and composed build-up play under pressure. Furthermore, a whole group of players who featured at the World Cup are still on leave (Hjalmar Ekdal, Shurandy Sambo, Hannibal, Zeki Amdouni, and Lyle Foster), while Jordan Beyer and Josh Cullen are continuing to recover from injuries. So the English side will not be at full strength for the match against Ajax.

The club began their pre-season preparations earlier and have not lost in their last three friendlies: two wins and a draw. Moreover, Amsterdam have already played one official match, thrashing a strong Vojvodina side 4–1. As seen, the new manager has quickly connected with the players, and it is already bearing fruit. In contrast, Burnley flopped on their US tour, failing to win any of their three matches. And Hayen only led the team in the final game, which ended in a 4–1 demolition. He clearly needs more time to integrate his ideas. Given the visitors’ personnel problems and the fact that the match is in Amsterdam, the hosts are likely to get the job done. Our pick: Ajax win.
