Anderlecht

Anderlecht have done everything in their power to reduce the return leg to a mere formality. The Belgian side travelled to Almaty and produced a commanding 3-0 victory, effectively securing their place in the Europa League group stage. Now the only real question is whether Kazakhstan’s representatives can avoid a second consecutive European fiasco, or whether the home crowd will once again be treated to a convincing Anderlecht performance.
The first leg in Almaty was a masterclass in efficiency from Anderlecht. They returned from Kazakhstan with a three-goal cushion and complete control of the tie, and the scoreline could have been even more emphatic had Vitor Bruno’s players not taken their foot off the pedal after the break, once the scoreboard already read 3-0. Just as important as the goals was the clean sheet — Anderlecht never allowed their hosts a way back into the match. Back in Brussels, with more space to exploit in attack, they will feel even more comfortable.
A three-goal advantage gives the coaching staff plenty of room to rotate the squad, especially with a domestic derby against Union Saint-Gilloise on the horizon. There is no need for Anderlecht to force the issue or chase a cricket score. Instead, they can calmly keep possession, wait for the opponent to make mistakes, and punish any overcommitment. Their home form in Europe this season has been solid too: Vitor Bruno’s side have already beaten Hammarby 3-1 and PAOK 3-2 in front of their own supporters.
Kairat find themselves in an extremely difficult position after that heavy home defeat. The result cannot be blamed on Shirobokov’s red card, as the team was already 0-2 down by the time he was sent off. More worrying was the lack of attacking threat — the Almaty side managed only five shots in the entire match and could not even score a consolation goal. It is now abundantly clear that their chances of progressing are practically non-existent. Anderlecht demonstrated a significant gap in both playing quality and individual talent over the two legs.
For the return fixture, Kairat will have to follow a completely different script. If they believe in miracles, they must take more risks, press higher up the pitch, and try to unsettle their opponents. That approach might create a few chances, but it will also leave gaps behind the defensive line for Anderlecht to exploit. The numbers do not offer much encouragement either: Kairat have failed to score in three consecutive European matches, having previously lost both legs of their Champions League qualifying tie against Levski by 0-1.

The match will be officiated by Espen Eskås, a well-known and experienced Norwegian referee. He has taken charge of 15 Europa League matches, averaging 4.27 yellow cards and 23.64 fouls per game. In the current campaign, he was the man in the middle for the clash between Crvena Zvezda and Viktoria Plzeň, where he produced six yellow cards.
Main prediction: Kairat +1.5 handicap at 1.62
After their victory in Almaty, Anderlecht have practically guaranteed themselves a spot in the Europa League group stage. With a more important domestic derby coming up, the home side is expected to field a rotated lineup. The motivation will not be as high as it was a week ago, which gives Kairat a genuine opportunity to avoid a heavy defeat. In their Champions League qualifying tie against Levski, the Kazakh side lost both matches but only by a single goal each time, so taking Kairat with a +1.5 handicap looks like a sensible bet.
Total prediction: Over 2.5 goals at 1.73
Trailing 0-3, Kairat will have to play much more boldly and leave more space behind. Anderlecht had already scored twice in Almaty before Shirobokov’s red card, and they have scored at least three goals in each of their last three European matches. With such a comfortable aggregate lead and probable rotation, expecting the same level of scoring from the Belgians might be asking too much, but a more open game should still provide them with plenty of chances. The visitors, meanwhile, will also be pushing for a goal of their own, making over 2.5 goals a reasonable call.
