Bayer Leverkusen continue their preparations for the Bundesliga season kicking off in late August, and their next friendly comes against a historically favourable opponent. The four previous meetings between Leverkusen and Genk have never seen the Belgians get the better of their German counterparts: three wins for the club from the Bundesliga and just one draw.

Bayer Leverkusen: A Change of Coach, but the Style Remains

Bayer Leverkusen had a very real chance of qualifying for the Champions League last season, but they picked up only a single point in the final two matchdays and had to settle for a Europa League berth. The club’s management deemed that outcome unsatisfactory and decided to replace the head coach: Casper Juelmann was succeeded by Carles Martinez, who previously worked at Toulouse. Under the new boss, the "Aspirins" have so far played two friendlies, comfortably dispatching opponents from lower German leagues – Bamberg 7-0 and Kickers Offenbach 3-1.

In these control matches, the Spanish coach has been actively rotating his squad, spreading the workload evenly between first-team regulars and reserves. However, it is already clear that last year's trend of attacking football based on total possession will continue under Martinez. The chronic vulnerability to counter-attacks that plagued Juelmann's team is also unlikely to disappear. The only goal Leverkusen conceded in their last friendly came in that very manner – a classic counter-attack.

The most problematic area for the "Pharmaceuticals" is the left flank, orphaned by the sale of Alejandro Grimaldo to Atletico Madrid. The hosts have not yet found a worthy replacement for their leader, and his position is being temporarily filled by Abdoulaye Faye and Jannuel Belocian – both completely unsuited to the role. Martinez also cannot yet count on his best defender, Jarell Quansah, along with two important midfielders, Malik Tillman and Exequiel Palacios, who are still on leave after the World Cup.

Genk: Imbalance in Play

Genk lost to Gent on penalties (1-1 after regular time) in the playoff match for a Conference League spot and ended up without European football for the 2026/27 season. Unsurprisingly, after such a failure, head coach Nicky Hayen did not continue with the team. His place has been taken by Dane Jess Thorup, and this summer the Belgians are conducting a very busy campaign: six friendlies already, three of them under the new boss. However, the results under the Scandinavian have been quite mediocre: just one win and a crushing defeat in the only clash with a serious opponent, AZ (0-4) – played in two 60-minute halves.

The new coach favours an attacking style with active involvement of full-backs to create numerical superiority in certain areas of the pitch. However, the imbalance in the visitors' game is still too great, and they allow a huge number of dangerous chances at their own goal. Constant rotation does not help either: the "White-Blues" play the two halves with two different line-ups, each of which can be described as a mixed bag.

The main star of the club for the upcoming championship should be the towering forward Rafiu Durosunmi. Last season the Nigerian flopped in Serie A with Pisa, but at the level of the Jupiler Pro League he has a chance to re-establish himself. The match against Bayer will be his debut for his new club. Konstantinos Karetsas is also still around. The Greek playmaker is likely to change clubs soon (main contenders are Milan and Borussia Dortmund), but he may still take part in the friendly against the "Aspirins". In the second half, he will be replaced by Jeppe Erenbjerg, bought from Zulte Waregem, who possesses a similar set of qualities.

In the off-season, coaches are actively experimenting with line-ups, but even the reserves of a German top club have an incomparably higher individual class than most of the starters of a modest Belgian team. The visitors demonstrated their inability to cope with this kind of opposition in their previous friendly against AZ. Leverkusen can exploit the free spaces on Genk's half of the pitch just as effectively as the seventh-placed team from last season's Eredivisie did. A major boost is the return of the hosts' top scorer from last season, Patrik Schick, who did not take part in the first two summer friendlies. However, Leverkusen themselves are still far from solid in defence, especially on the left flank, where the absence of Grimaldo was exploited on the counter-attack even by such a low-level opponent as Kickers Offenbach. We expect another high-scoring match: at least three goals were scored in five of Genk's last six games, and the same applies to Bayer. We choose total goals over 2.5.
