Inter will wrap up their first summer training camp with a friendly against a side from Germany’s second division. For the fans at Wildparkstadion, this exhibition match carries far more emotional weight than it does for the Nerazzurri. After all, the local club will be facing a Serie A opponent for the first time in the 21st century.

Tactical Analysis: Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe have not tasted top-flight football in 17 years and failed to secure promotion last season, finishing a lowly 10th in the 2. Bundesliga. The club’s management was not satisfied with Christian Eichner’s work, so the Blue-and-Whites will enter the 2026/27 campaign under Maximilian Senft – a coach who previously worked only in Austria. Under the new boss, the hosts have already played three friendlies, but their competitiveness has been far from convincing: a 4‑4 draw with regional‑league side Freiberg, followed by a 1‑3 loss and a 1‑1 draw against Japanese club Shimizu S‑Pulse.

Senft’s men have been particularly poor at the back. They press aggressively, but the execution is clumsy, allowing even low‑level opponents to find space behind the line. The seven goals conceded in two matches therefore come as no surprise. The biggest problems appear on the left flank, which lost one of last season’s key players, David Herold, to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Bayern Munich loanee Deniz Ofly is still far from comfortable in that position, regularly committing positional errors.

The squad has been reinforced with as many as ten new signings this summer, yet only the towering centre‑forward Moritz Broschinski has impressed, scoring two of the team’s six preseason goals. He is expected to pose the greatest threat to Inter’s goal, partnering Shio Fukuda in a 3‑5‑2 formation. Unlike the two previous friendlies, a major rotation is unlikely on Sunday. With the season starting in two weeks, Senft will use the matches against high‑profile opponents – Inter and Hoffenheim – to give his first‑choice lineup maximum playing time.

Tactical Analysis: Inter

Christian Chivu silenced many sceptics by leading Inter to the Scudetto in his very first season at the helm. Defending the title, however, will be tougher. The stars are not getting younger, and one of them, Denzel Dumfries, has already left Lombardy for Real Madrid. The Dutch wing‑back’s departure has left a glaring hole on the right flank: Andy Diouf and Luis Enrique are not yet ready to occupy that position at a top club on a permanent basis, neither in terms of level nor playing style.

Nevertheless, under Chivu, Inter remain unbeaten in regular time in friendlies. During their current training camp in Germany, they have already played a sparring match against local amateur side Aasen, but a 16‑0 victory hardly provides much food for thought. Notably, the Lombardy side used two completely different lineups in each half, heavily involving youth‑team players after the break – and we expect a similar approach in Karlsruhe.

Inter have completed only two summer transfers so far. Ivan Provedel, arriving from Lazio, will compete with Josep Martinez for the starting goalkeeper spot, while academy product Aleksandar Stanković, returning from a one‑year loan at Club Brugge, adds depth in midfield. The Serbian midfielder has time to make a strong impression on Chivu, especially since Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Petar Sučić are resting after the World Cup. Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram are also taking a break, which gives more playing time to 18‑year‑old Jamal Idrissi – and the young forward has made the most of it, scoring a brace against Aasen.

The favourite in this contest is clear. Karlsruhe are not only far inferior in class to the reigning Italian champions, but they are also stylistically the perfect opponent for Inter. The German side’s pressing is still poorly organised, while Inter have long been regarded as one of Europe’s best teams at playing out of pressure through passing. Expect the Nerazzurri’s wide players to enjoy plenty of freedom on Sunday, and finishing chances is not a problem – not only for the senior forwards, but also for youth‑team talents like Jamal Idrissi. Back a comfortable Inter victory with a -1.5 handicap.
