Yet the real examination arrives now, as Ralf Rangnick’s side travel to Dublin to face the one side expected to push them all the way for top spot. Ireland: Confidence Restored

The 1–0 loss in Kosovo could have sent Ireland into a tailspin, but Heimir Hallgrímsson’s response was emphatic. In their second match, the Boys in Green dismantled Israel 3–0 away from home, with all three goals arriving by the midpoint of the first half. It was their most convincing away victory in three years and, more importantly, it restored belief at exactly the right moment. Three points from two games is a solid return, but the manner of that win in Israel has completely changed the mood around the squad.

What makes this Ireland side particularly dangerous is their resilience in Dublin. They are now unbeaten in eight consecutive home matches, a run that includes notable scalps like Portugal (2–0) and Finland (1–0), as well as creditable draws against Hungary (2–2) and Senegal (1–1). For a team without an abundance of household names, the combination of tactical organisation and the energy generated by the home crowd is a genuine weapon. Hallgrímsson, clearly with one eye on this fixture, made five changes to the side that started against Kosovo, bringing in Liam Kitching, Adam Idah, Conor Coventry, Jack Moylan and Ryan Manning. That rotation allowed several key figures to rest, and the manager now has a fully refreshed squad to call upon.

The absence of captain Nathan Collins for the entire international window is a blow, but the emergence of debutant Kitching has softened it. The young defender has already looked comfortable at this level. Up front, Troy Parrott remains the undisputed focal point, particularly with Evan Ferguson sidelined through injury. Austria: Perfect Start, But Problems Mounting

The strongest argument in Ireland’s favour is the home crowd.
